We’ve kept 4150 kgs of food scraps out of landfill!

Together, Waiheke is delivering on the circular economy for Aotearoa

The Heke has been doing everything WE can to ensuring that 100% of Waiheke’s food scraps are composted on-island, in alignment with Waiheke’s Climate Action Plan. From July 2023-June 2024, while also actively minimising waste, we’ve contributed 83 wheeley bins full of food from the kitchen and plate scraps:

That’s 4150 kgs of food scraps out of landfill, and 10375 kgs of equivalent CO2 emissions that weren't created at landfill sites! Instead, the compost is used to grow food here on the island.

AMAZING OUTCOMES ARE A WIN-WIN-WIN

We've actively contributed towards:

  • Making the Waiheke climate action plan a reality.

  • Contributing towards the circular economy for Aotearoa.

  • Following the waste hierarchy for New Zealand.

  • Reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

  • Recycling nutrients and improving soil health.

  • Decreasing the use of chemical fertilisers.

So when you eat here, you can feel good that you’re making the best choices, and we are too! Thank you!
