How to get to The Heke on Waiheke Island
Visit the home of Waiheke Whisky Distillery and Waiheke Brewing Co, and our restaurant at The Heke.
You’ll find The Heke at 64 Onetangi Road, opposite the golf course, on the golden ‘mile’ of Onetangi Road. To reach The Heke you'll pass Wild (800m) -> Stonyridge (500m) -> - SOHO (500m) -> Tantalus (300m) -> Postage Stamp (100m) -> THE HEKE
To catch the ferry to Waiheke Island from Auckland, there are three options. That’s another blog post so read it here to get the low-down on the three ferry companies. You might like to also check out an earlier post on ways to save money on ferry tickets.
With a Car: Just navigate to 64 Onetangi Road. We have a big car park.
Without a Car: When you get off the ferry at Matiatia Wharf you can taxi, rent a car, electric bike, scooter, or catch a bus. If you plan to rent a taxi be sure to read the offical information on taxi fares to book a reputable company.
Public Bus: You can use an AT HOP card on Waiheke buses. There is a bus stop on both sides of the road, close to our gate. You’ll want to catch 50A or 50B bus to Onetangi and ask the driver for THE HEKE on Onetangi Rd, or look out for the golf course. Bus fares are around $2.50 per adult. This is a link to a PDF of the timetable.
Hop On / Hop Off Bus: The Fullers Hop on Hop off (HOHO) bus has a separate ticket that you need to buy at the ferry terminal, or online from their website - see below for more on the HOHO bus.
Bike: Bring your bike or hire from a local company - we love ERIDE Waiheke and you’ll find them in the ferry terminal when you arrive. They have maps ;-)
More about buses:
Buses don’t take cash but you can use your AT HOP card to get around on the bus services. Apparently you’ll be able to use your EFTPOS card to pay late in 2024, but for now you need a HOP card.
Plan your trip on the ATHOP app. Put in Matiatia and 64 Onetangi Road. The local bus network on Waiheke connects the foot ferry at Matiatia and the Kennedy Point car and foot ferry, with all suburbs and the most popular beaches, shops, and restaurant areas. At the moment bus fares anywhere on the island are around $2.50 per adult with a ATHOP card which you can get at the the ferry terminal if you don’t have one.
If you want to stop and shop at Oneroa village on the way here, you can jump on and off a bus, and if you’d like to head all the way to Onetangi beach you can get there too. The buses on Waiheke are frequent, cheap and economical.
Recently most of the buses on Waiheke were replaced with fully electric buses, so they are quiet, eco-friendly and not polluting the island’s roads!

Fullers Hop on, Hop off bus
The Hop on, Hop off bus lets you tour the island at your own pace, and is an affordable way to travel to a lot of places around the island, for example the public bus does not go past some Vineyards like Mudbrick. Your return ferry fare is included in the price or it can be bought separately. The bus stops at 16 locations around Waiheke. You can purchase a one or two-day pass. The two-day pass must be used on consecutive days. Check its schedule though as it does not run every day in Winter.
The Fullers Hop On Hop Off stops outside our gate. Just ask the driver to drop you at The Heke bus stop and walk 30 metres along Onetangi Road until you see our sign, straight across the road from the golf course.
