Things to do with kids on Waiheke Island

Hey there kids,

Are you excited for the school holidays? We are too! At The Heke, the best place for kids on Waiheke, we believe that having fun doesn't have to be expensive. That's why we've put together a list of budget-friendly activities for you to enjoy during your time off. Check our our Instagram Highlight reel of Kids on Waiheke Island.

  1. Visit a local park We are blessed to live in New Zealand, where there are plenty of beautiful parks to explore. Take a picnic lunch and spend the day soaking up the sunshine while enjoying the fresh air. The new skate park is open, at Tawaipareira Reserve with skate park, a bike track, basketball rings and picnic tables. Waiheke has so many parks and nature walks. There is a brand new playground at Little Oneroa, the Palm Beach Playground is always a hit and it has a reserve, the beach and free clean BBQ’s, and there is also the Boat at Onetangi and the secret playground behind the community centre in Surfdale.

  2. Join a free workshop Check out google to see what is available and if anyone is offering any free workshops during the holidays. It's a great way to learn something new and meet new friends.

  3. Have a movie night Invite your friends over for a movie night at home. All you need is a cozy blanket and some popcorn to make it a fun and budget-friendly event. Or hit up the Waiheke Island Cinema - it’s so good!

  4. Try a new recipe Get creative in the kitchen and try out a new recipe. You can find lots of free recipes online or in your local library's cookbooks. Our library is awesome!

  5. Go for a bike ride Hop on your bike and explore your local neighbourhood. It's a fun and healthy way to get some exercise while enjoying the fresh air. For e-bikes check out Waiheke Bike Shop.

  6. Visit a local museum or art gallery on Waiheke Island. Many museums and art galleries offer free entry for children. It's a great way to learn about history, art and culture while having fun. Your parents might never had visited the museum here… take them there! The Auckland Art Gallery is great for classes and activities too.

  7. Join a free online class There are many free online classes available on topics like coding, art and music. It's a great way to learn something new from the comfort of your own home. The library hosts lots of events too, and you can read a magazine from their selection while the kids choose a book.

At The Heke, we believe that having fun doesn't have to break the bank. We hope that these budget-friendly activities will help you to have a fantastic and memorable school holiday. We’d love to see you for a play and lunch any day we are open - you can call on 09 372 0020 to ask any questions. Enjoy!
